Speak fluently in English during job interviews
There are two categories of people
- Who
can speak English fluently, but feel nervous during the interview.
- Who
can understand English, but have trouble in speaking English fluently.
That's
ok. It is understandable that giving interviews is the toughest job. Nowadays
most of the interviews are conducted online without human interactions. This
has made interview process tougher now.
In
this blog, I will give you tips on how to be confident when answering your
interview questions whether it is online or offline.
#1. Proper salutation or greeting right:
Always make sure you to start your interview with proper salutation or greet right.
For e.g.:- If the interviewer asks you a question “Hi how are you?”
Instead of answering “I am fine” you can add spiciness and honesty to your answer. Your answer can be:
“Good morning, I am giving interview for my dream job; I am doing really great a bit nervous though. Thank you for asking”.
Actually a good start will make you comfortable and calm down you so that you will make lesser mistakes while answering. Sometimes there are chances that the interviewer will not respond to you. If the interviewer behaves in a rude manner to you, understand it may be a scenario that they are trying to assess you on your stress levels. In short, don't mirror their emotions.
Whatever attitude the interview shows on you, you remain calm.This will make the interviewer start responding to you in a better way.
#2. Prepare scenarios on your achievements and accomplishments:
The interviewer will be curious to know your previous experiences, so that they can assess what you can do in future in your job.
Make a list of your certifications, awards, achievements and extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, Soft skills you are good in and also what courses you have completed. Whenever the interviewer asks you questions you can answer them with an example.
#3. List the challenges or problems you faced:
List all your problems or stressful situations or risks you handled. Prepare scenarios or stories to explain your problem solving and decision making skills, negotiation skills, stress management, risk management etc.
#4. Interview Preparations and Practice:
Prepare and practice your interview questions with your friends’ or in front of a mirror or you can record your answers in your mobile and refine your answers frequently. Most of the times we fail to speak properly in the interview because of lack of preparation and practice.
#5. Keep giving interviews:
Appearing for an interview is a skill and it cannot be acquired overnight. It can be acquired only through practice and preparation. Never let a bad interview stop you from appearing for the next one. Even for a high profile individual or resume it takes at least 10 interviews to get a good offer.
There are so many tools available online where you can practice and prepare your interview questions.
To summarize,
- Understand the job requirements thoroughly before attending the interview.
- Prepare and practice before an interview session.
- Speak slowly in an interview so that the interviewer will understand you better. Also it gives you time to think what you are going to speak next.
- Improve your fluency. It is ok to have minimum grammar mistakes. The interviewer is interested only on your skills and your experiences. The more you prepare and practice, the better you can share it with your interviewer.
